Lol, what i really can't understand is how one can go to Calcutta, or India for that matter, and not shoot in color. And not shoot people too? Makes little sense. And that argument about Indian bureaucracy being more accessible is utter hogwash.
Btw, HCB's ekta interview aachey, ekhaney. Slightly long-ish, but eminently watchable. That, my friend is photo-journalism.
ok, ok, but give the man a break -- or ekta agenda chhilo with the architecture, etc. o ta chhara ki korechhe sheta to ekhane bolte ashbe na, so we don't v much know, do we? as for colour, our hcb also continued to work when colour was well accessible, but chose not to. i have no problem with that. but yes, if taylor thinks indian bureaucracy is more accessible, i shudder to think of wherever else he's been! and yes, the charlie rose hcb is great, all except rose himself, of course. saw it in frog read some while back.
Yeah, Rose is pretty funny. But give him a break too...he's an American after all.
And as far your first point goes, well, I mostly think India in terms of her people. Maaney, the Western world is not quite like that. The structures and the monuments stand by themselves. But, Coffee House ripped bare of it "bhodrolok"-gon is kind of soul-less.
And I have Jean Renoir's "The River" with me. There are a couple of gorgeous scenes of the ghats shot from aboard a ferry. Very reminiscent of certain scenes from Apur Sansar, or prolly the other way round. Let me know if you want it.
yes please for the renoir. yes, he did, and even painting himself from photographs of himself, as i'm sure you know. i have a rather lovely documentary on him, which i suppose you'd like.
